Privacy Policy
FairKeel helps you assess used cruising boats before you buy. To do that we need a small amount of data from you. Here's exactly what we collect, why, who handles it, and how to make us delete it.
What we collect, and when
When you use the free snapshot wizard
- The listing URL or pasted listing text you give us. This is the boat you're researching. We fetch the page (or read the text you pasted), extract the structured data, and store it so we don't have to re-fetch it if you or someone else looks at the same boat again.
- Your answers to the 8 wizard questions (intended use, cruising area, crew experience, budget ranges, ownership horizon, DIY tolerance, decision timeline, and any free-text notes). This becomes your buyer profile, used to tailor the snapshot.
- An anonymous session identifier stored in your browser's local storage so we can pick up where you left off if you close the tab. No name, no email, no account at this stage.
- The IP address and request metadata that any web server sees when you visit (timestamp, browser type, referrer). Used to operate the service and detect abuse.
When you ask for the paid deep-dive
- Your email address, only after you submit it at the paid call-to-action or checkout. We use it to deliver your paid report, respond to questions, and tell you about material changes to your saved snapshot.
We do not run third-party analytics, advertising trackers, or session-replay tools. We do not set tracking cookies.
What we don't collect
- We do not ask for your name, postal address, or phone number.
- We do not ask for the boat seller's contact details.
- We do not ask you to log in or create an account.
- We do not track you across other websites.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data for advertising.
Who processes your data on our behalf
FairKeel relies on a small set of third-party service categories. Each only sees the slice of data needed to do its job:
- Hosting and backend functions — sees your IP address and request logs.
- Database — stores the structured listing data, buyer profile answers, generated snapshot, and (once you submit it) your email.
- Large language model (LLM) providers — read the listing text and your profile answers to generate your snapshot. Receive listing content and profile answers only — no email, no IP.
- Web-fetching services — fetch listing pages from sites that block direct requests. Receive the listing URL only.
- DNS and inbound email routing — answers DNS queries for fairkeel.com and routes inbound email (e.g. to
support@fairkeel.com) to our personal inboxes. Sees email contents when you message us at a fairkeel.com address. - Domain registrar — registers and renews the fairkeel.com name. Sees almost nothing beyond registration metadata.
We choose providers with established compliance practices (SOC 2 / GDPR). If you want the specific provider names for your jurisdiction, email us and we will share them.
How long we keep your data
- Listing data: stored indefinitely so repeat visits to the same boat are fast and consistent. If a listing is removed by the broker, we keep our copy as a historical record unless asked to delete it.
- Buyer profile + snapshot: kept indefinitely so you can return to your snapshot and so we can improve the methodology over time.
- Email address: kept until you ask us to delete it, or until two years of inactivity, whichever comes first.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Show you what data we hold about you.
- Correct any data that's wrong.
- Delete your data, including the buyer profile, snapshot, and email.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Stop us emailing you, even if we still hold an email on file.
Email support@fairkeel.com. We aim to respond within seven days. We may ask you to confirm your email so we don't action a request from someone impersonating you.
EU and UK visitors (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you're in the EU or UK, our legal basis for processing your data is your consent (you choose to use the wizard) and our legitimate interest in operating, improving, and securing the service. You can withdraw consent at any time by emailing us. You can also complain to your national data protection authority if you think we've mishandled your data.
FairKeel is a small operator and does not currently have an EU representative. For data protection matters, contact support@fairkeel.com.
California visitors (CCPA / CPRA)
We do not sell or share personal information in the sense those terms are used under California law. You have the right to know what we hold, to delete it, and to correct it — see the "Your rights" section above. We treat all visitors the same regardless of state.
Australian visitors (Privacy Act 1988)
FairKeel is operated from Australia. We aim to handle personal information consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles, regardless of whether the small-business exemption applies. If you think we've mishandled your data, email us first; if you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Cookies
We don't set tracking cookies. The site stores a small amount of state in your browser's localStorage so the wizard remembers your answers if you close the tab — this is functional, not tracking, and stays on your device. Our hosting provider may set technical cookies (e.g. for routing or bot-detection) that are strictly necessary for the site to operate.
Children
FairKeel is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has used the service, email us and we'll delete the data.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and bump the date below. For changes that affect data we already hold, we'll email anyone with an email on file before the change takes effect.
