1984–1995 · designed by Thorwald Karlsson · built by Najadvarvet AB
Premium Swedish-built offshore cruising sloop with centre-cockpit aft-cabin layout. Moderate-displacement fin-keel hull with skeg-hung rudder and encapsulated long-fin keel, built to a high specification (insulated hull, mahogany interior, Selden rig) for cold-water + offshore passages. Available in standard and shallow-draft versions. Mk1 (counter stern) and Mk2 (sugar-scoop transom) variants within the production run. Direct competitor in the segment with the Hallberg-Rassy 38 / 40.
This is a general read on the Najad 390 class — informed
background, not a verdict on any individual boat. Condition, refit history,
and how a particular hull was sailed and stored matter far more than class
reputation. Use it to know what to look for; for a read on a specific
listing, run a free FairKeel report on that boat.
Premium build quality directly comparable to Hallberg-Rassy in the same size class. Heavily-glassed hull, stainless hardware throughout, mahogany interior joinery.
Centre-cockpit aft-cabin layout gives the aft cabin its own ensuite — strong for couples doing full-time liveaboard.
Used-market price retention is strong; Najad is a recognised premium brand and well-maintained examples hold value.
Known trade-offs
No longer in production since 1995 — Najadvarvet AB subsequently went through ownership changes and eventual receivership. Parts sourcing is now owner-community and specialist-chandler dependent; verify parts availability for the specific engine and rig hardware on any hull before purchase.
Heavy displacement = slow in light air. Not a light-air boat; typical owners report needing 10-12kn TWS for satisfying performance.
Premium service costs. Many parts are EU-pricing-tier; refit budgets need to account for the price premium relative to mass-market contemporaries.
Age-related quirks to expect
Original Volvo Penta MD2030 / 2030B diesel — service-parts availability at age 30+Low1984-1995
Original Lewmar hatches + portlights — UV degradation of acrylic glazingLow1984-1995 (all hulls, age-driven)
Mk1 (counter stern) vs Mk2 (sugar-scoop transom) — confirm generation before survey; Mk2 has more modern layout and transom accessLowspans production run; Mk2 in later hulls
Najad hulls of this era are insulated for cold-water cruising. Original Eberspächer / Webasto diesel heaters are reaching typical service-life limits on early production hulls. Check operation, fuel lines, exhaust integrity — a real part of the Najad cold-water value proposition.
Original Selden rig. Rigging typically due at 20-25 years — earlier production hulls are now in the re-rig window. Check chainplate condition at deck penetrations and any signs of compression at the mast step.
Original below-WL fittings on a 15-25 year hull. Premium build means bonding and backing blocks are typically sound, but the fittings themselves should be inspected and budgeted for replacement at the next haul-out.
Electrical system (typically 12V house)priority: offshore, liveaboard
Najad 390s of this era typically have substantial DC systems for cold-water cruising loads. Verify charging infrastructure, battery bank condition, and any owner-fitted inverter / solar additions.
How it fits your plans
Offshore
Designed for it. The Najad 390 is one of the credible 38-40 ft offshore platforms in the premium segment — cold-water Baltic and North Atlantic capable out of the box.
Coastal
Excellent but overspecced for pure coastal use. Premium pricing is harder to justify if offshore is not in the mission.
Liveaboard
Strong. Insulated hull, heating, generous tankage, centre-cockpit aft-cabin layout all point at full-time liveaboard.
