Moody 37

1985–1987 · designed by Bill Dixon · built by Marine Projects / Moody

British production centre-cockpit cruiser. Bill Dixon design for Marine Projects / Moody. The centre-cockpit layout is the signature feature — gives an aft cabin with its own ensuite, a configuration favoured by cruising couples. Designed for coastal + offshore cruising in European waters; many examples have crossed oceans.

This is a general read on the Moody 37 class — informed background, not a verdict on any individual boat. Condition, refit history, and how a particular hull was sailed and stored matter far more than class reputation. Systems to check before you buy

Hull moisture survey (osmosis history) priority: offshore, coastal, liveaboard

UK production hulls from this era have a higher incidence of osmotic blistering than premium contemporaries. A thorough moisture survey is warranted at this age. Many hulls have already been treated — verify the treatment date and method.

Standing rigging + deck-stepped mast priority: offshore, coastal

Deck-stepped aluminum spar — check the compression post and the deck collar for corrosion. Rigging typically due at 20-25 years; most Moody 37s should have been re-rigged at least once by 2026.

Below-WL through-hulls + seacocks priority: offshore, coastal, liveaboard

Original bronze fittings on a 25-40 year hull are at or beyond service life. Centre-cockpit layout means some bilge access requires disassembly of the aft cabin sole.

Centre-cockpit specific — aft cabin water-ingress paths priority: offshore, liveaboard

Centre-cockpit boats have specific water-ingress paths around the cockpit-to-aft-cabin trunk and cockpit drains. Inspect for soft spots, deck delamination, and aft cabin headliner staining.

How it fits your plans

Offshore
Capable for moderate offshore use — many Moody 37s have crossed the Atlantic. Lighter build spec than premium Scandinavian contemporaries (e.g. Hallberg-Rassy 36); offshore-readiness depends more on individual condition than class reputation.
Coastal
Designed for it. The Moody 37 is a competent European coastal cruiser — common in UK and Mediterranean fleets.
Liveaboard
Strong for cruising couples. Centre-cockpit aft-cabin layout is the selling point — aft ensuite, generous tankage for the LOA.
