Hunter Legend 37

1986–1989 · designed by Warren Luhrs · built by Hunter Marine

Late-1980s / early-1990s mid-size Hunter cruiser in the "Legend" sub-line — Hunter's bridge generation between the artisan John Cherubini era (full-keel cutters, traditional construction) and the modern B&R-rig era. Fin-keel, spade rudder, fractional sloop rig with swept-spreader / Bergstrom & Ridder context and a backstay; not the later no-backstay arch-era Hunter configuration. Aimed at coastal cruising and family use. Lighter and more performance-oriented than the Cherubini Hunters; less idiosyncratic than the modern B&R-rig Hunters. A "transitional" Hunter both architecturally and aesthetically.

This is a general read on the Hunter Legend 37 class — informed background, not a verdict on any individual boat. Condition, refit history, and how a particular hull was sailed and stored matter far more than class reputation. Yanmar 3HM35F 34hp diesel documented Low 1986-1989
Aft cabin layout with quarter-berth navstation — standard production-cruiser layout of the era Low all

Headliner panel sag on many hulls — adhesive aging Low 1986-1989

Systems to check before you buy

Standing rigging + chainplates priority: coastal, offshore

Conventional fractional rig WITH backstay. Original wire rigging now 30+ years old — well past 15-20 year service interval. Stainless chainplate-through-deck crevice corrosion is the class-pattern failure mode. Deck-stepped mast: check deck core under mast step.

Engine (Yanmar 3HM35F 34hp) priority: coastal, liveaboard

Opened sources verify Yanmar 3HM35F 34hp. Yanmars are well-supported with broad parts availability, but engines at 35+ years are at the major-service / repower decision point depending on hours. Heat exchanger, mixing elbow, raw-water pump are typical wear items. Check mixing elbow carefully — corrosion is the recurring Yanmar issue at this age.

Deck core + hull-deck joint priority: coastal, offshore, liveaboard

Balsa-cored deck typical. Moisture-meter survey at stanchions, genoa tracks, chainplates, mast step. The hull-deck joint is a bolted-and-sealed flange — sealant degradation by year 25-30+ creates leak paths. Many hulls now need targeted re-bedding work.

Through-hulls + seacocks priority: coastal, offshore, liveaboard

Original bronze through-hulls (some hulls had Marelon). Bronze seacocks at 30+ years should be exercised regularly; dezincification is a concern. Audit all of them.

Tankage (fuel + water + holding) priority: coastal, liveaboard

Original aluminum fuel tank may show pitting / corrosion at 30+ years; replacement is a known job. Water tank typically polyethylene and more durable. Holding tank and hoses well past end-of-life.

How it fits your plans

Coastal
Designed for it. Conventional rig + fin-keel + spade rudder = standard coastal cruiser of the era. Sound platform when systems are sound.
Offshore
Possible with prep but not designed for it. Production-grade build, spade rudder, lighter displacement than the Cherubini-era Hunters that preceded it.
Liveaboard
Workable for a couple. Tankage modest (~30 gal fuel / ~75 gal water typical). Aft cabin layout gives privacy.
Racing
Sometimes club-raced in PHRF but not the primary intent.
Weekending
Designed for it.
